New Acropolis presents recommendations to the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS)
In December 2011, the International Organization New Acropolis (IONA), which has a presence in twenty of the thirty-five member countries of the Organization of American States (OAS), and is registered with the OAS in Chile as a Civil Society Organization, presented to the Permanent Council of the OAS its recommendations for strengthening a Democratic Culture in the Americas, in the context of the tenth anniversary of the Inter-American Democratic Charter.
Based on articles 26 and 27 of that international instrument, IONA recommended the promotion of sustainable cultural policies, highlighting the following recommendations:
- To promote democratic values and practices to prepare citizens to live together harmoniously
- To develop programs to promote dialogue, harmonious coexistence and other core democratic values
- To strengthen alliances with Civil Society institutions
- To promote financial sustainability in the implementation of long-term cultural and educational programs.
«We think that the increasing level of misunderstanding between citizens and specialists calls for a change of paradigms », said Eva Rodriguez, IONA’s representative to the OAS; «true culture is not just another specialism, but the cement that can unite specialists with the general public, thereby overcoming indifference, misunderstandings and indignation among citizens».
